What You’ll Need:

Before you start:

  • A pair of pointe shoes
  • 2 long satin ribbons (usually cut into 4 pieces)
  • 1 elastic band (optional but recommended for extra support)
  • Needle and strong thread (preferably matching your ribbons)
  • Scissors
  • Clear Nail Varnish (to seal ribbon ends)

Step 1: Mark the Correct Placement

  1. Fold the heel of the pointe shoe down toward the toe so it lies flat.
  2. The crease that forms shows you where your ribbons should be attached — just forward of this line.
  3. For added security, angle the ribbon slightly forward so it wraps snugly around your ankle when tied.

Step 2: Cut & Pin the Ribbons

  1. Cut your ribbons in half so you have 4 equal pieces.
  2. If your ribbons are pre-cut, skip this step.
  3. Fold each ribbon end about ½ inch under to prevent fraying.
  4. Pin each ribbon inside the shoe where you marked.

Pro Tip: Always check that your ribbons sit flat on your ankle — test by trying the shoe on and tying them. Adjust if needed.

Step 3: Sew the Ribbons

  1. Thread your needle securely and knot the end.
  2. Sew each ribbon in a box or triangle shape for extra strength.
  3. Take small stitches through the canvas lining but avoid sewing through the drawstring casing or the satin outer layer.
  4. Many dancers double-stitch for added durability.

Step 4: Add Elastic (Optional)

  1. Many dancers sew an elastic band across the heel for better support.
  2. Cut elastic to fit snugly around your ankle.
  3. Sew each end inside the shoe, just below where your ribbons are attached.

Step 5: Seal the Ribbon Ends

  1. There are many ways to seal your ribbons but we prefer to seal with clear nail polish to prevent fraying.
  2. Trim any loose threads.

Ready for the Barre!

Your ribbons should feel snug but not too tight. Cross them neatly around your ankle and tuck the ends of the knot in securely for a polished, professional look.

Extra Tips for first time sewers!

✅ Always sew both shoes at the same time to keep placement even.
Some dancers prefer diagonal or slightly offset ribbon placement ask your teacher if youre unsure.
Practice makes perfect take your time!

Happy dancing and stay safe en pointe!
