For dance teachers and dance students alike, the Dance Sneaker has been a staple for for many years-but with new brands and styles coming on to the market such as US brand, Fuego, and BLOCH’s new Kix trainers- how do you know which is best suited? Our handy guide talks you through the best one to choose for your dance needs, or why not check out our vlog which details the difference between a regular trainer and a specialist dance trainer here.
What is the difference between Jazz Shoes and Dance Trainers (Sneakers)?
A jazz shoe is a light-weight shoe with a small heel, available in both full sole and split sole options with choices of either suede soles or rubber (or a combination of both). Fitting snug to the foot, they offer full flexibility of the feet and are perfect for jazz, modern dance and musical theatre.
A jazz sneaker (or dance sneaker) is sturdier in construction usually with a split sole to allow the feet to point and first came to the market around 25 years ago. They offer more support for a dancer or teacher who is on their feet all day and require more support and can also be suitable for environments and floors outside of the usual dance studio.
What different types of Dance Trainers are there?
The original style of dance sneaker features a chunky split sole with a spin spot to allow full movement across the floor. These sneakers are perfect for dancers or teachers who are on their feet all day and need a shoe that is versatile for a wide range of styles, such as jazz, commercial, street dance, musical theatre etc.
The built in arch support and variable lacing system keeps the foot stable and supported as well as a cushioned heel for shock absorption. The outer material is made from a quick dry material keeping the foot cool and healthy.
Examples of these include BLOCH’s BOOST sneaker:

Or more affordable versions, such as the exceptionally popular Roch Valley RVSNEAK available in a huge array of sizes from a child’s size 12 through to an adult 12.
There are also more streamlined versions of the original sneaker available for those who require a more neat fitting shoe- these offer support and comfort along with breathable fabric to keep the feet cool. Perfect for cardio classes, Zumba and jazz class, such as the Capezio Web
